2011 Leipzig, Tropical Theme Park Gondwanaland in the Zoo
The largest tropical house of Europe was opened in the Leipzig Zoo on 01.07.2011. The design put demanding requirements on the structural implementation. A free spanning structural steel dome consisting of triangular elements arches over the hall. The span of the free-spanning 2165 tonne steel construction is 160 m.
The dome is 34 m high. The surface area of the roof construction of the insulating 3-layer UV transparent foil cushions is 17 900 m². The outer support columns of the isosceles roof construction are designed as articulated stanchions.
Calenberg Perforated Bearings do not only allow for movements which happen during the construction stages and the variations in temperature but can also take up the forces due to own weight and maximum loads when large rotations of structural members occur.
Structural calculations have shown that at nodal points temporary load peaks due to wind occur which can be taken up reliably by Calenberg Perforated™ -Bearing ST.
The high functionality and quality of the installed Calenberg bearings assured that all static actions were correctly and centrically transferred to the articulated stanchions.
The advisory support by the Calenberg engineers and the high quality products assisted in achieving a construction like the Leipzig Gondwanaland.
