2015 Bochum-Langendreer, 3-way junction
Profiled track mat USM© 2020 was installed as the base and side mats as part of a mass-spring-system in a sensitive section of the BOGESTRA tramway. Track bed mat USM® G-1027 was used to isolate the pipes and shafts. The USM track bed mats were laid longitudinally in the concrete troughs as base mats. The mats were laid transversely in the upper parts of the concrete troughs.
On this project, the track bed mats were laid mainly in complete rolls. The rolls were set down on the trough slab near the installation position then rolled out and cut to shape.
Like laminated panels, the mats were placed next to one another and tightly jointed. With this method of placement, a 100 mm wide overlap strip that is vulcanised to one side of the mat covers joints between adjacent mats.
The overlap and joint-covering strips were fixed to the mats with staples. This measure ensured that concrete could not penetrate the joint and get under the mat.
In the curves, the mats were cut to suit the radii and laid transversely to the longitudinal axis of the structure and any required make-up pieces fitted.
The site personnel were instructed in how to lay the elastomer mats. The work was carried out in two shifts.
The side mats, which were precut to be slightly oversized, were placed vertically against the side walls of the trough. The upper edge of the walls was marked to the side mats which then were cut to the finished height.
This method was necessary to ensure the shape of the mats matched the inclined vertical profile of the trough.
The joint between the base and the side mats was sealed with joint-covering strip. The vertical side mats were temporarily fixed in place using a very simple method: roofing battens with two nails protruding on both ends, which were removed after concreting. The open, cleanly cut edges at the mat butt joints were covered with EPDM joint-covering strips.
Pipes and shafts were isolated with G-Mat and sealed with joint-covering strips to eliminate sound bridges.
The site works were given their final inspection and accepted on 11.08.2015 by Mr Liesenfeld from consultants I.B.U. Ingenieurbüro für Schwingungs-, Schall- und Schienenverkehrstechnik GmbH, Ladenspelderstrasse 61, 45147 Essen.
